What is Disaster Recovery (DR)? Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and Business Impact Analysis (BIA) are all processes that deal with the ability to continue operations in the face of events that hinder, damage or endanger IT services, facilities or people. Business Continuity planning/Contingency planning is a process that defines exactly how, for which applications and potentially for how long a business plans to keep functioning after a disruptive event. In the wake of September 11, 2001, when most people think of DR they unfortunately think of catastrophic or cataclysmic events. Disruptive events however, can range from a small hardware failure, to human error to events similar or potentially even more serious than the events of 9/11/01.
Here is a quick summary of the causes for application downtime
:

  • 40% Operation error

  • 40% Hardware error

  • 12% Application failure

  • 5% Disaster

  • 3% Other environmental
